Background

It has been the aim of Anew NZ to establish communication networks across all sectors in New Zealand for conducting nationwide debates and deliberations and through this develop a shared vision for the country - and facilitate a leadership network that converts vision into action. Presently Dave Breuer is the Founding Director of Anew NZ, a charitable trust - a network of concerned citizens that want a better New Zealand.

Anew NZ's values include respect for people, justice and equity, as they seek a sustainable future with social, economic and environmental integrity. Anew NZ believes that peace is a foundation upon which to build our society.

Upon talking with a number of his colleagues in the fields of disarmament and peace Dave Breuer found that the notion of New Zealand facilitating regional mediation and conflict prevention was very high on the list - an event whose time had come. So a number of people met over a number of months to plan the hui that took place over the weekend of 20 - 22 February 2004.
The weekend gave the opportunity to begin to build a network of practitioners that seek to bring peace to the region of the Pacific…. to build community, a network for creating peace - learning how to identify the hot spots - bring salve to the wounds, sort out relationships, and find common ground.

We sought to formalize our relationships - giving them form and substance giving them a life that will grow - and developing direction that will yield a region that can live up to its name.
