Progress

The inaugural hui brought together high-level decision makers within the NGO sector, iwi, and the State who have an interest in advancing regional security through the establishment of a Network, in keeping with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, kaitiakitanga ('obligated stewardship'), and mutual respect for one another. International participants, recognized for their connections with networks throughout the region, were crucial for the contribution they could make to ensuring that the Network would meet identified needs in the region.

A further conference that focused on conflict in the Pacific, Securing a Peaceful Pacific - Preventing and Resolving Conflict in the Pacific, was  organized in October 2004, by John Henderson of the University of Canterbury. Progress that had been made towards consolidating the Network was reported on at that conference, and the subsequent feasibility study was intended to provide a platform for co-operative activity for peace-makers and peace-builders in the region.

The next step will be a regional meeting to take place, most likely in Fiji, in early 2006.
