Pacific Conflict Transformation Network

An inaugural hui to consider the development of a Pacific Conflict Transformation Network was born from an initiative conceived originally by Dave Breuer, the Founding Director of Anew NZ, and planned by a group of people from the Peace Foundation (Dr. Kate Dewes and Marion Hancock), Massey University (Dr. Warwick Tie), Auckland University of Technology (Peter Greener), Victoria University of Wellington (Dr. Ian McDuff), University of Canterbury (Associate Professor John Henderson), and Haare Williams. Subsequently Sir Paul Reeves (AUT), Brigadier Roger Mortlock (retd) and Pauline Tangiora joined the group.

That hui took place in February 2004. Financial Support for the hui was provided by PACDAC (Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control) and NZAID, without whose assistance the project could not have proceeded. Further financial support for the publication of a Report on the hui, Sowing the seeds, was  provided by AUT and the Pacific Cooperation Foundation. Administrative support has continued to be provided by Anew NZ, Massey University and the Peace Foundation.

Following the decision at that hui to support the establishment of a Pacific Conflict Transformation Network (PCTN), a proposal for funding for a feasibility study was submitted to NZAID and was successful. The aim of the proposal was to gauge the feasibility of linking the network across a wide range of Pacific Island NGOs. The links to the Feasibility Study are at left. The next step is now  to support a meeting to be held early in 2006, to bring together of as many of those from across the Pacific as possible who took part in the survey, to advance the development of the Network.
